"The Proceedings of the Cotteswold Naturalists Field Club"

(Edited by Dr. J. Angseesing)

The Proceedings cover a wide range of material ranging from the traditional reports of the Council, news, the reports of field meeting and a mix of scientific papers covering geological, botanical, zoological and antiquarian interest.

In the later part of the 1900's the club's focus drifted away from the Earth Sciences and the content of the Journal reflected this. In the mid 1990's the club made a conscious decision to rediscover its former status in the Geoscience world. With the appointment of Dr Adrian Parker (Oxford) as the Proceedings editor in 1996 there has been a rapid move back to the balance that formerly existed. The last 6 volumes of the Proceedings have reflected this and the Club now publishes annually. The proceedings have been published annually since 1846 and have produced some 600 geology papers over the last 150 years from in and around Gloucestershire, a tradition that is now very much alive again. The recent Proceedings have contained about half a dozen geology related papers per volume from sources such as the BGS (following their recent remapping programme) and academic researchers working in the area.

The first volume of the Proceedings of the Cotteswold Naturalists' Field Club was published in 1847. In its early days the Proceedings was an eminent publication with world-famous contributors such as Buckman, Lycett and Witchell.

Alas, in the latter half of this century many Field Clubs and Societies have disappeared and along with them, their Journals and Proceedings. Many authors who would have have submitted papers for publication in such places tend now to publish in national or international journals and as such many of the regional bodies have suffered. There is still a very important place in society for publications such as our Proceedings.

The full archive collection of the Proceedings are now housed by Gloucestershire Geology Trust, at the Geological Records Centre.
